Formed in the nineties by Scilla Stephenson, Makit is a business where Lacemakers, Quilters and Needlecraft enthusiasts can find all the supplies they need from a company that truly is passionate about Textile Crafts.
Coming from a family of artisans and generations of Lace Makers, Tailors and Needlewomen, Scilla is the perfect person to help other craft enthusiasts with their skills.
Scilla, who has a City & Guilds Award for Fashion and Design, has been making lace for over 27 years, loves designing (when she finds the time) another hobby is the history of textiles and lace from which she has assembled an interesting collection of antique lace.
As well as running the business from the warehouse and office in rural Cambridgeshire, Scilla is often seen out and about at Lace Days and Quilting events, giving talks about the History of Lacemaking in the Beds/Cambs border area, or showing her lace collection.
In 2012, Scilla’s husband Steve became fully committed to the business. Having trained as a Textile Technologist and with many years’ experience of converting textiles internationally for industrial usage, the garment industry and national retailers such as Marks and Spencer, combined with a wide experience of sales and marketing he has been a perfect fit for the company.
As the years have passed the business has grown and Makit is now a favourite supplier of threads, tools, accessories and books to Lacemaking, Quilting and Needlecraft customers across the UK and overseas.
We are proud of the relationship we have established with our customers – many of them have consistently supported us and who have become firm friends. This together with the strong association that we have with our key suppliers, has helped us to create the international business that we now have; one that provides product from stock with a service level that is the envy of many of our competitors.
If you are into needlework, lacemaking, quilting or other textile craft please give us a call. We are always happy to talk to others about our passion for threads and their use and we love to hear about other people’s craft interests and skills.
We look forward to talking to you during the coming months.
