Description
Lace Identification is about the lace of the last two centuries. The Lace you might find in the attic, second hand shops and the internet. Other books might describe older laces that can be found in museums. This is a practical book to help you understand the lace that is around us today.
It gives the History of Lacemaking and places it in the wider social context. Early in the 1800’s there was a move from lace being only for the wealthy, to it being found in the wardrobes of a growing middle class. This was helped by the lowering of price as a result of the machine made laces. First came machine made nets which served as a basis for the handwork such as mounting Honiton Lace Sprigs. Then Machine made imitations of hand made lace.
this made life very hard for the cottage lace makers and much of their lace dropped in standards as they tried to compete with the price of machine made lace.
The twentieth century saw the demise of hand made lace as an industry. But there was later a revival of hand made lace as a recreational craft which continues until this day.
This book has a wide appeal to all interested in textile crafts.
